7. Self identity
At Somethings, we understand the importance of providing comprehensive and inclusive Identity training to our mentors. We want parents to feel confident in our mentors' authority, mastery of the topic as most of our mentors are LGBTQ+ themselves, and their ability to approach sensitive discussions with empathy and support. Here's an expanded section on Identity:
Identity is an inherent part of being human, encompassing various aspects such as biological sex, gender identity, gender roles, sexual orientation, and sexual expression.
There are multiple healthy ways to express sexual feelings, either alone or with a partner, and it's crucial to understand that sexual intercourse is just one form of sexual expression.
Understanding Sexual Orientation
Our mentors are knowledgeable about sexual orientation and approach the topic with respect and curiosity. We emphasize the significance of recognizing that sharing one's sexuality can be incredibly vulnerable. Here are some common orientations:
Heterosexual: Attraction to individuals of the opposite sex.
Bisexual: Attraction to both male and female partners.
Homosexual: Attraction to individuals of the same sex.
Asexual: Little to no interest in sexual contact with other people.
Pansexual: Attraction to individuals of any sex.
It's important to note that there are many more sexual orientations, and our mentors are equipped to discuss and support individuals across the diverse spectrum.
Factors Influencing Sexual Orientation
Our mentors are well-versed in the understanding that sexual orientation is the result of a combination of environmental, emotional, hormonal, and biological factors. Each person's journey and experiences contribute to their unique sexual orientation. We emphasize that non-heterosexual orientations are not caused by parental upbringing or early sexual experiences. Having a non-heterosexual orientation does not indicate mental illness or abnormality, although societal prejudice and misinformation can lead to social challenges.
Sex, Gender, and Gender Identity
To provide a comprehensive understanding, our mentors address the distinctions between sex, gender, and gender identity. Sex refers to biological characteristics, including genetic makeup, hormones, and reproductive organs. Gender and gender roles refer to societal expectations about how individuals should think and behave based on their assigned gender. Gender identity, on the other hand, is an individual's personal and internal feeling about their sex, gender, and gender roles, including clothing, behavior, and appearance. We highlight that some individuals may identify as transgender when their gender identity does not align with their assigned sex.
Awareness of Risks and Challenges
Our mentors are sensitive to the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth and the higher risks they may encounter. We provide statistics and insights to increase awareness, including the increased prevalence of mental health problems, suicide, violence, victimization, HIV risk behavior, and substance abuse among LGBTQ+ youth. By understanding these risks, our mentors can offer appropriate support and guidance to LGBTQ+ mentees.
Supporting Diverse Identities
We emphasize the importance of supporting and advocating for LGBTQ+ youth. Our mentors are trained to create a safe and inclusive environment where mentees feel accepted and understood. We share statistics demonstrating public support for LGBTQ+ rights and the positive impact of gay-sensitive HIV prevention education on reducing risky sexual behavior.
At Somethings, our mentors are committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive space where discussions about identity and sexuality are handled with expertise, empathy, and respect. We prioritize providing accurate information, creating awareness, and supporting diverse sexualities to ensure the well-being and understanding of all our mentees.
