FAQs

What is a Certified Peer Specialist?

A Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) is a trained young adult who uses their own experience with mental health or life challenges to support teens. They’re certified by the state to provide peer-based emotional support.

How do you become a Certified Peer Specialist?

Mentors complete a state-approved peer specialist training and certification process. Afterward, they receive additional Somethings training on supporting current teen issues, handling digital communication safely, and recognizing when to involve clinical staff.

How are Mentors trained?

Before working with teens, mentors complete extensive training in emotional support, active listening, confidentiality, boundaries, and crisis response. They learn practical tools to help teens manage stress, relationships, and daily challenges safely.

How are Mentors supervised?

Every mentor is background checked, clinically supervised, and monitored in real time whenever they’re online. Licensed clinicians and our care team review all conversations, provide instant guidance, and ensure every interaction is safe, ethical, and effective.

How do we match teens with a Mentor?

Matches are based on shared interests, age, and lived experience to create genuine, relatable connections.

How do teens find us?

Teens connect with Somethings through schools, social media, community partners, or referrals from Medicaid and mental health providers.
